Economic Impact

Saskatoon’s John G. Diefenbaker International Airport is a major economic driver for the city, accounting for over one billion dollars in economic output while also being a significant generator of employment in the region. An economic impact study was completed in 2019, with results indicating the following.

  • YXE creates a total of 8,373 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs, bringing with it an annual labour income of $310.1 million, $937.2 million in other expenditures, and a total economic output of $1,247.3 million for the Saskatoon Region.
  • Provincially, the Saskatoon Airport generated employment of 10,300 FTE jobs and $1.5B in economic activity.

  • Roughly, one in 19 jobs in the Saskatoon Region depend directly or indirectly on the Saskatoon Airport. At the provincial level, one in 57 jobs in Saskatchewan depend directly or indirectly on the Saskatoon Airport.

  • Each time a B737 arrives and departs at YXE, it generates 1.1 FTEs, $41,649 in annual labour income, and $167,530 in output.

  • Each time a Bombardier Q400 arrives and departs at YXE, it generates 0.4FTEs, $16,660 in annual labour income, and $67,012 in output.

  • YXE provides critical access to aviation related emergency response services, which serve all of Saskatchewan. Services such as Saskatchewan Air Ambulance, STARS and other emergent response operation are crucial to the wellbeing of residents.
