Environmental Sustainability at YXE

At YXE Saskatoon Airport, sustainability drives everything we do. From innovative energy solutions to cutting-edge waste management and wildlife conservation, we’re committed to protecting the planet while ensuring exceptional airport operations.

Our Path to Net-Zero

We’re committed to achieving the net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050, aligning with ACI-North America’s commitment and the Canadian Net-Zero Accountability Act. While our journey is still in the early stages, we are proud of what we have accomplished and remain vigilant in making our long-term goals a reality. This journey includes strategic investments in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainable practices.

Carbon Reduction Statement from the CEO

Responsible environmental management and sustainability are at the core of YXE Saskatoon Airport’s corporate strategy now and in the foreseeable future. YXE recognizes the continued need for and importance of sustainable development to reach net zero by 2050.

Diligent monitoring of our energy and carbon footprint has enabled us to make remarkable strides in reaching our 2023 strategic goal of reducing carbon emission by 20% from our 2015 benchmark year. Now we set our sights on a 30% reduction in carbon emissions by 2027 from our 2015 benchmark year.

As we propel ourselves into a new level of sustainability, we continue to challenge ourselves by investing in strategic initiatives that enable us to deliver the highest quality of excellence to our staff, airport partners and communities of Saskatchewan. The Saskatoon Airport has undertaken the following initiatives:

  • Adopted a holistic Sustainability plan
  • Improved energy efficiency across all areas of the Saskatoon Airport
  • Deployed our first rooftop solar installation
  • Achieved level 1 Carbon Mapping certification from ACI
  • Field Electrical Center Modernization
  • Development of a pedestrian/cycle access connecting the airport to the community

YXE Saskatoon Airport remains committed to delivering the highest standard of service while reducing our carbon intensity and ensuring we meet the needs of our community without compromising the opportunities and resources available to future generations.

Sincerely,

Stephen Maybury

President & CEO, Saskatoon Airport Authority

Energy and Emissions

  • Renewable Energy: A solar array at our Maintenance Operations Centre generates 33,200 kWh/year, cutting 26 tCO₂ annually. Plans are underway for a larger solar farm to power up to 20% of our terminal building.
  • Energy Efficiency: Investments in LED lighting, high-efficiency electric motors, and Endotherm additives to our heating plant have helped reduced our carbon footprint by 27% since 2015.
  • Electric Vehicles: New EV charging stations and electric ground service equipment help us stay ahead in clean transportation.
  • Airport Carbon Accreditation: Since 2018, we have participated in the ACI-NA Airports Carbon Accreditation to record our emissions profile and commit to tangible reductions. By investing in new technology like solar, and upgrading existing infrastructure, we have achieved and maintained our Level 2 (Reduction) under the ACA Framework.
The current solar array at YXE’s Maintenance Operations Centre reduces the airport’s emissions by 26 tCO₂ each year.
YXE’s carbon reduction initiatives have contributed to reducing the airport’s carbon footprint by 27% since 2015.

Water Conservation

  • Smart Irrigation: Treegator bags ensure tree health during droughts while minimizing water waste.
  • Flow Sensors: Automatic faucets have cut water use by 25%.
  • Water Fill Stations: Passenger water stations have saved an estimated 192,962 bottles from going to landfills, reducing plastic waste by 13,266 pounds.

Waste and Recycling

  • Construction Recycling: 14,983 m³ of millings from runway projects has been recycled to rebuild perimeter roads.
  • Organic Waste: A pilot program has diverted 4,671 kg of organic waste from landfills in 2024.

Wildlife and Urban Farming

  • Wildlife Management: Active falconry and mitigation strategies have reduced bird strikes by 78% since 2017, keeping aircraft safe while protecting local wildlife.
  • Canola Farming: 790 acres of airport land are used to cultivate renewable fuel crops.
  • Bee Hives: With 23 hives on-site, we support pollination and produce an estimated 1,500 pounds of honey annually.
  • Pollinator Garden: YXE’s pollinator garden provides a protected area for pollinator species to aid in the pollination of plants in the surrounding area while esthetically enhancing the walking trail for airport guests. All plants in the garden are native plants to Saskatchewan.
